In a globalized world, family names are increasingly of interest for individual identification. For this reason, the body of personal names for the period between 1531 and 1725 in the region of former Austrian Silesia is analysed on the basis of to date unpublished archival sources (the urbaria of the principality of Jägerndorf and the Freudenthal domain as well as the Carolingian cadastres). The exogenous colonisation-relevant economical, geographical, climatic, political and cultural-historical influences are taken into account. In addition, the landscape of names is compared with the neighbouring regions of the Glatzer Land (region around today's Klodzko), the Neiss and Leobschütz regions as well as the Kuhländchen (region on the border between Silesia and Moravia known today as Kravarsko). The analysis spans the years from the time family names became fixed around 1600 up to 1945 for the names dealt with in the area, the neighbouring regions, and today's Czech Republic.
The main part of this study examines the origin, development and significance of the family names in the region Jägerndorf (Krnov) and Freudenthal (Bruntál). All names are classified under five motivation categories (patronymics/matronymics, origin, dwelling place, occupational or descriptive names). Numerous evidences of names allow for multiple interpretations, the order of which is categorised in accordance with the probability that an interpretation is correct. Multiple interpretations and ambiguous interpretations of names have to do with the respective region in the German-Slavic contact zone of the area under review.
This is the first analysis to deal with the historic development up to the written fixation of personal names by imperial patents and decrees of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the allocation of names to Jews resident in the region, and the interpretation of the names of Jews in the region under review. The range of subjects differs significantly from that of the German-speaking regions of Moravia, Bohemia and Silesia (Upper and Lower Silesia). All linguistic research projects so far have disregarded the body of names of Jews in former Austrian Silesia. Moreover, the analysis calls attention to the connexion of names of Jews to the names of the German- and Slavic-speaking population.
Family names in the towns of Friedersdorf, Seifersdorf, Stadt Jägerndorf, Alt Vogelseifen, Lichtewerden, Dittersdorf am Kirchberg and Stadt Freudenthal are examined in greater detail.
